Burbank REALTOR Drops Knowledge in Building a Master Closet

Michael Gentile, a Burbank REALTOR who also specializes in upscale home remodeling, shares his knowledge in building a master closet.

Hiring a pro to build a big, fully-outfitted master closet will cost you around $3,000 or more. Walk-in closets are at least 7 by 10 feet or 10 by 10 feet if you share it with someone else. The space allows you to build shelves, poles, cubbies on the walls, plus an elbow room. An additional 3 by 3 feet space gives you enough space for a chair.

Storing and Organizing Your Clothes

The best way to store your clothes is to have storage units with a range of compartments to hold different pieces of clothing. Organizing systems will cost you from $1,000 to $6,000. A cheaper alternative is to install DIY kits of plastic fiberboard. Modular components are available in home centers or online stores such as EasyClosets.com. Closet modules are usually 2-3 by 7 feet. Closets must have a drawer unit, a shelf unit, a unit with two closet poles, and high single closet poles for long clothes.

Specially-Designed Closets

The advantage in hiring a contractor to design your closet is you get the maximum use of the space. The custom setup will be based on your needs and preference - no extra drawer you do not need. Closet specialists charge from $4,000 and even up to $75,000. To maximize your payment, choose a design that is flexible so you can alter the structure yourself whenever needed.

Lighting and Ventilation

Good options for lighting are surface-mounted fluorescent lights with covers and recessed ceiling fixtures. They give off the best lighting minus the excessive heat. If possible, avoid having windows in your walk-in since sunlight diminishes fabric quality and color. Ventilation can be as simple as an exhaust fan or as elaborate as heating and cooling vents.

A washer and dryer is one of the choice features in walk-in closets. 24 to 27 inches wall space is needed for small units. The cost adds up to $3,500 to $5,000, including waste line, countertop folding, electrical outlet, and water supply. Labor excluded.
